Midsummer's Promise

Title: Midsummer's Promise
Author: WG
Rating: G

Longest day and shortest twilight,
Fading darkness, growing sunlight:
Mid-year's brightness gives assurance
That all darkness lacks endurance.
Hope that I knew not forsook me
Now crowds out each fear that shook me,
Singing to my fading spirit
Joyous song, oh, can you hear it?
Though I now must briefly leave you
There's no need for loss to grieve you;
Dark shall never prove the stronger,
Night receeds and day grows longer.
Eyes that close when in death taken
Open soon as new day wakens.
There, my love, I will await you,
This time first to take a gate new.
And, in light, I'll gladly tarry
While a grey ship swift will carry
You to him who, on that far shore,
Waits for you to pass this last door.
Then, in sunlight I'll be calling
Both of you past night's last falling.
Take my hands, in joy come with me;
Lay aside last grief - run with me
Through forever's fields unfolding,
Nevermore their bliss withholding.
