Two Clovers and a Heart
“Ah,” Milo Boffin threw himself onto the cushioned armchair that sat in a corner of the living room in Brandy Hall. “I love the feast. I love the dance and the food. But these old feet o’ mine won’t be able to carry my fat body anymore.” He huffed loudly, tired but content at the same time. “Unlike you, lad. You shouldn’t be here, you young hobbit. Go out there and enjoy yourself.”
Frodo giggled quietly. He was still young, but an all night Hallow's Eve party might not be for him. He did still wish to bounce and sing around the bonfire, but for him it was his eyes that felt as though they were prepared to flutter close anytime.
“No, Uncle Milo. I’ll just sit here with you. I know you need company.”
Milo guffawed.
“You may, oh, you may, my dear. But bring your poor uncle a pint of beer, will you, lad? Sitting inside here feels warm and cozy compared to the cold night outside is lovely, but I’ll never turn down the warmth of some tipple.”
Laughing a little, Frodo stood up.
“Of course, Uncle.”
“Hey, watch your step, son.” A hobbit caught Frodo on the shoulders as he turned to the open door and bumped into him.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Uncle Filibert. But by the way, would you like some beer?” Frodo asked sweetly. He liked his uncles and wanted to buy his time to be with them instead of being pushed to join the crowd or even sleep! Adults usually wanted to spend time without any minor amongst them, while they often did something interesting – in Frodo’s opinion, at least – such as playing cards or telling some hearsay.
“Sure, boy, that would be nice.” And Frodo jumped in glee.
Back to his two uncles again, Frodo saw they had started dealing some cards. Ah. Such a nice way to spend the rest of the night after a lot of moving and turning. Frodo put the heavy glasses carefully on the wooden table, hoping silently they would offer him to join them.
“Thank you, lad,” said Milo, turning sideways. “Come. Join us.”
They did not have to offer him twice. Frodo bounced and placed himself on another chair so now the three of them made a small circle facing the low table.
“What should I do?” he asked excitedly.
“It’s easy,” Filibert began. “You need only to put any two cards on the table with one of the cards doubles the numbers on the other. For instance, it’s two to one, four to two, and so on.”
Frodo’s brow creased. He had never heard this kind of game before.
“Don’t be confused, lad,” laughed Milo. “It’s just learning while playing, alright? You young hobbit should study all the time.”
Frodo stared blankly before finally he snorted. So that was what he still had to do! Studying even when you are playing. Ah, well.
“No problem,” he said while still laughing.
“Have you ever seen a shadow?”
“Huh?” Frodo’s mind was totally absorbed in the cards he was holding. He was rather annoyed right now for there were only very few cards he had put down while Milo and Filibert had gathered quite a lot. And the pile on the table was getting thinner and thinner.
“A shadow. Possibly a real form that spirits can take, but sometimes it looks just like any one of us. It doesn't do anything, though, nothing that’s harmful to you anyway,” explained Filibert.
Frodo looked stricken as he stared at the hobbit. He was not afraid of ghosts. He just did not believe in their existence. “There’s no such thing as…”
“You don't believe it, aye, lad?” Filibert chuckled as he again put down two cards with two clovers and a heart.
“No,” Frodo shook his head.
“But tomorrow is the day of the dead. They will return to you, so you just watch it.”
Frodo did not want to think that his parents might return to him no matter how much he wanted them to. No. Certainly not in the form of shadows.
Milo swigged a mouthful of beer, and nodded. “Yea. Shadows are everywhere, matter of fact, but tomorrow they will –”
Someone slid into the house as he spoke. Filibert lifted his head.
“Hi, Sara. Care to join us here, teaching our poor Frodo how to beat his old uncles?”
But there was no reply from Saradoc Brandybuck. Filibert raised his eyebrows and huffed, and then snorted a bit.
“I wager he’s a bit busy, eh?”
No one responded, and Frodo dipped his chin deeply into his chest. He began to regret his decision to join his uncles. Their talk about shadows certainly made him uncomfortable. The others were soon immersed on their cards, too.
“Hey, here you are!”
Frodo well-nigh jumped out of his skin at the loud, drunken shout from the direction of the door.
And so did his two companions, after they turned sideways to catch sight of Saradoc with his big tumbler of beer.
They did not recall the hobbit walk out the door after his coming in before.
